If you experience a 30 second or so delay when browsing to Windows 9x computers, this quick fix will get you browsing with speed again. Less than 60% means that the cache isn't very effective, so you should make the cache larger. Much more than 80% typically means that more RAM is allocated to SMARTDrive than is needed. That RAM probably can be better used by making it available to your programs. --- I have several tips for you to speed up your system. 1) if you want to get rid of the icon which run with you windows 95 start up. First you have to go to start --> setting --> taskbar, then you have to choose start menu programs tab, then choose remove, and you choose the folder called "Startup", and you will see all the program which runs when you start win95. Delete the unwanted programs. Then your system will start up a lot faster. 2) Go to this site "http://www.download.com/pc/software/0,332,0-49377- s,1000.html?st.dl.search.results.tdtl" and download this program, this is from microsoft, so it is safe for your computer. And edit the perference, especially the "Boot" perference, you can choose to not show up the splash screen when you start windows. And other setting to make your computer faster. Once the file is found, right-click it and select Properties from the pop-up menu. 4. Click on check boxes to remove the Read-Only and Hidden attributes then click OK. 5. Double-click msdos.sys or right-click it and select Open With from the pop-up menu. Enter Notepad as the opening program and click OK. 6. Enter the following under [Options]: BootDelay=0 or BootDelay=1 (you'll have to type this yourself - 0 and 1 are delay seconds, default is set to 2 seconds). 7. Save your changes and close Notepad. Return msdos.sys to it's default attributes (Read-only and Hidden), and click OK. That's it! All you have to do now is restart Windows and watch how it loads faster. The bottom line: If you don't mind waiting for Windows to load, it's not worth going through this hassle just to save 2 seconds worth of loading time. Also, there is always a risk when changing sys files so if you don't want to take it, don't bother to change msdos.sys. ------------ http://www.windowsgalore.com/windows.98/tip8.html Speed Up RAM Access No matter how much random access memory (RAM) is installed in a computer, Windows uses virtual memory.  A quick way to speed up your virtual memory, and your computer in the long run, is to purchase a small Hard Disk. These small hard disks are usually easy to find for under 35 dollars.  Installing these drives as primary slaves and configuring the Windows swap file there can substantially increase performance.
