"Fun With Computers At Barnes & Noble" By: The_Mechaink 5/10/00 If you look around barnes and noble, you will see about 5-7 computers in various places of the store. Upon closer examination, you will find that they are for employee use and that they are password protected. These are Win95 boxes runing on the b&n WAN. The password protection, however, is extremely weak. All that it protects is the program that the employees use for book tracking, ordering, and the like. This is enough to keep out most people, but if you can get about 3 or 4 minuites without an employee nearby, you can have some fun. How to defeat the pw/os lockout protection: 1. Ctrl-Alt-Del To Display the task manager window. 2. click the restart button. 3. once the computer begins to reboot, hold down *F-11* this will bring you to a selection window. 4. select "ms-dos mode" 5. at the C:> prompt, type "edit autoexec.bat" 6. when the autoexec.bat file opens, comment the line that is something like "c:/blah/lockout.exe" i cant recall the exact filename, but it should be obvious, cause the line should look out of place compared to the other files. (if youre unsure, look at your autoexec.bat file on your computer and compare it.) 7. save and reboot. 8. once done rebooting, this is a win95 box on the network. open the network neighborhood directory, then have fun! You now have access to the b&n network... I'll leave the rest up to you. how to cover your trail once youre done: *this should be obious to most people* 1. boot to dos as shown above. 2. uncomment the line that you commented. 3. save and reboot. and now..the B&N Network is at your fingertips! DO NOT BE DISTRUCTIVE! Have Fun! Don't get busted! The_Mechanik The_Mechanik@secureroot.com
