History: Once there was a farmer who had a beautiful wife, they were happy, but dirt poor. They never had any sons, but it seemed like every year they had a new daughter, each one was more beautiful then the last. Unfortunately this attracted the attention of the evil man who owned the land the farmer worked on. When each girl came of age the man took the daughter away saying he was making her his newest servant. In his clutches they were raped and when he tired of them he often sold them off to his friends who were just as cruel.
The farmer may have been weak, but he wasn't stupid. When his youngest and last daughter was weaned, he sent her to a convent of women dedicated to a woman who was said to be so chaste the gods made her a minor goddess of virgins upon her death. There he knew his daughter would be safe as well as educated.
The women of the convent did teach the children well. But when a special talent or skill was found they spent most of their time on that. Vallerie turned out to be talented in several areas, first being singing, acting, and anything else to do with performing. The next, surprisingly, was blades. Be it a rapier, long sword, or a tiny dagger, if Vallerie can lift it, she can wield it with deadly accuracy. Finally, she has a talent for speaking, reading, and writing in non-human tongues, especially that of Elves and Dwarves. She learns them quickly and easily.
Vallerie's best friend was Elaina. A beautiful girl who was originally brought with her parents to be slaves. But a group of men set out to free the slaves - her parents were accidently killed. Elaina had skin as dark as the night and was rumored to be part Elf herself, though that was never proven. They grew up hand in hand as sisters. They were exact opposites in everything. Vallerie having a quick temper and stubborn nature. Elaina almost never lost her temper and gave in almost too easily. But they loved each other with a devotion so strong it was said even the gods couldn't part them.
Unfortunately, that wasn't true. For when Vallerie came of age, her father's evil landlord tried to claim her from the convent. Saying she was his rightful property. When the women wouldn't hand her over he left, but came back in the dead of night with friends. They attacked. Though there were many fighters, these women were not Amazons and were over-powered. Only a few escaped the horror of being raped or murdered. Most by dying by their own hand. Vallerie held her own against the half-drunken men. Seeing how the landlord would kill any that harmed her she had a little bit of an edge besides being sober.
Elaina wasn't so lucky. Unskilled in defense and separated from Vallerie in the battle, she was subjected to the horrors the other girls suffered. In one last act of strength, she took her own life and the life of her rapist by using the last of her flagging strength to roll them both into a burning shed just as it collapsed. Vallerie didn't even know until the battle was finished. Which was long in coming.
It was too late for many when the party of warriors came and drove off the landlord and his friends. Vallerie the only one to come out of it with her virtue and life intact. There was nothing left of the convent to save. They buried their dead and gathered their few possessions. Then left for all corners of the earth. Vallerie knew she could never return to her family. So instead she took herself far away from her home. Keeping her beliefs with her and never allowing herself to give herself to a man. She knows she must wait until the gods decree it's time. Making her living by singing, acting, dancing, translating, or even participating in sword fights and spars.
