History:
Once upon a time, long before Hogworts, before even the Ministry Of Magic, there were two relatively strong but not extremely powerful wizarding families. The Hoods and the Munchasens. Neither family was big on "marrying pure" and mixed with muggles and married for love, but somehow they always came back to marrying (or at least breeding with) someone who's family line was a wizard or witch that magical blood was put back into their line. Then 5 members on each side of both the Munchasen and the Hoods went bad, following the Dark Arts, killing muggles and others they considered lower then themselves. So in 1599 both the Munchasen and the Hood lines swore off witchcraft. They tried to marry just muggles even when they weren't in love with them. They taught their children to hate it. Let the MOM take away their powers.
But always there was the inevitable marriage between a muggle member of the family and someone from a wizarding blood line - especially when that person was only a squib themselves. Unknowingly a Hood or a Munchasen would marry - or at least have an affair with - someone from a wizarding blood line. Strengthening once again the magic bearing blood that flowed in even the muggles in both the Hood and Munchasen families.
Then in The Year Of The Dragon, in California, USA - Ashley Katrina Hood was born to a muggle Munchasen and a muggle Hood.
Bonnie Munchasen had originally been married to a very abusive muggle man who use to beat the daylights out of her and their three muggle sons. But then he ran off with another woman. Bonnie's pastor decided to fix the divorcee' up with a gentleman he and his wife brought to the church. It was love at first sight. Though had Richard Hood and Bonnie known that they both had what they viewed as a tainted blood they never would've married. When Ashley was born her father fainted at the sight of her eyes. Her mother screamed at the sight of Ashley's hair.
You see, only those Hoods capable of magic were born with moldy green colored eyes. Only Munchasens with magic in them had blond hair.
Ashley shared other traits of her magical heritage - Like the Gitlins on her mother's side of the family, Ashley has a severe allergy to pork and consuming it makes her very, very ill. Like the MacFarllens on her father's side, she has a talent for singing. She's very pleasant to listen to. She bares a bat-shaped birthmark on her right forearm from a family blood line she doesn't even know about (or maybe it's just a birthmark, only one who'd really know for sure is Dumbledore because he seems to know everything). A head for potions and anything related to them (like Herbology since plants are a main part of potions).
So it was no surprise to Ashley's parents that weird things happened when she was upset. Things caught on fire, or exploded, but all were covered up by her magic-hating parents. They kept making excuses, hiding Ashley's heritage from her. The American MOM kept sending them letters, but they ignored them or sent back nasty replies about how their daughter didn't practice witchcraft and they wished to be left alone. When the invitation for Hedwig's showed up Ashley's mom wrote back, pretending to be Ashley, saying she thought magic was evil and to never bother her again. Both parents continued to intercepted owls and did their best to keep Ashley under their thumb and unmarried so she'd never find out the truth. Right down to forcing her to gain weight so men would not show interest in her.
Several attempts by the MOM - even when cooperating with branches from other countries - could not get Ashley's parents to change their minds. Finally they just gave up.
It wasn't until Ashley went to England to attend a college there that she found out the truth. (Getting to England had been a long struggle as obviously her parents didn't want her to be out from under their control.) One night as she walked unknowingly past The Leaky Cauldron she was attacked by a muggle mugger. A young redheaded wizard came out to see her struggling bravely against the knife wielding fiend. Suddenly the mugger's pants burst into blue flames. The wizard recognized this as a magical fire but from the horrified look on Ashley's face he could also tell that she had no idea how that happened. He knew he hadn't cast the fire spell and could see no one else about. Quickly he stepped up and put out the fire. Ashley looked pale, ready to faint. Having no where else to go, however a bad idea it seemed to him deep down, the wizard took Ashley into The Leaky Cauldron. She couldn't make a sound as she looked around at the strangely dressed people. He led her to a table and ordered some tea.
For hours they talked. An owl came to deliver a message from The Improper Use Of Magic office. The wizard handled it and within another hour a full investigation was launched. Ashley soon came to believe in magic for the first time in her life. She talked to her parents - and was promptly disowned by them. However her cousins, the Gitlins, took her in and even gave her money.
There was just one problem now. Adult or not, the Ministry Of Magic could not allow an untrained witch to run around. After much fighting, much debating, and many Howlers, the Ministry finally did the only thing they felt they could do - they got Ashley Katrina Hood into Hogworts - with the help of a certain headmaster who fought very hard to get the adult accepted.
Ashley is, deep down, a very brave young woman. She defied her parents to get the education and the freedom she wanted. She moved to a new country to attend college. She doesn't seem brave because she can be very shy and is afraid of high places (and therefore of flying) but how many adults are brave enough to attend school with children? Not many. Ashley is also a loyal friend, a studious person (but enjoys a good practical joke), and sometimes is a little underhanded but no more then the average person. It's her bravery that outweighs all, however, along with her big heart.
